Are you interested in becoming a Town Councillor?

Following the resignation of Richard Holmes, Bingley Town Council currently has a vacancy for a Councillor for the Bingley Central and Myrtle Park Ward. As there has been no request for an election, the Council will fill the vacancy using the procedure for co-option.  Details of how to apply are below.

As a local councillor you would be one of over 80,000 local councillors in England. Local councillors are volunteers and are held accountable by local people for things that happen locally. You would make a difference by influencing decisions that affect your community.

Bingley Town Council is an ambitious and active council and has had a considerable positive impact in Bingley. Examples of the work of Bingley Town Council include running regular monthly markets, re-provision of public toilets, repainting street furniture, providing floral displays throughout the parish, organising litter picks and awarding grants to local community organisations, all in response to residents’ feedback.

As a councillor you would have a responsibility to attend and contribute at meetings and to represent the people who live in the Bingley Central and Myrtle Park Ward. You would not be required to live in the ward.

If you would like to be considered for co-option to Bingley Town Council, please submit an application by email by noon on Monday 26th October 2020. Your application must include

  • a biography
  • reasons why you wish to become a town councillor, and
  • what you can offer to the council

You must also confirm that you meet all of the eligibility tests, namely age, residence, criminal record and bankruptcy, that apply to prospective town councillors. Eligibility criteria, and possible reasons a person would be disqualified from being a town councillor, are explained in the appendix to the procedure for co-option document. Please read this carefully.

All candidates will be invited to attend the full council meeting, which will be held by Zoom on Tuesday 27th October at 6.30 p.m. The Council will hold a virtual extraordinary meeting by Zoom to select a candidate on Tuesday 17th November at 6.30 p.m.

Please contact the Town Clerk via enquiries@bingleytowncouncil.gov.uk or T 07703 188660 if you require any further information or would like to discuss the process in further detail.
