Accessibility

We are committed to using reasonable endeavours to make our website accessible and usable by as many people as possible, regardless of ability or disability.

Accessibility features

This website allows you to change text size and colour contrasts directly from the toolbar on the left hand side of the screen. This feature will not work on text within images or documents.

Alternatively, you can use your web browser to change the size of the text, as well as magnify the page. Overviews of the features made available through the main browsers can be found here: –

Languages & translation

The site includes the Google Translate tool, a multilingual service provided by Google Inc. to translate written text from one language into another. There is a language selection widget at the bottom of every page:-

Clicking on the arrows opens a list of languages. Choose anyone of the 90 languages to see the text on the site translated. Note this function does not translate documents or text included in images.

Please also note that Bingley Town Council provides this link as a service to assist website users in good faith, but cannot accept liability for the content of Google Translate’s machine translations.

Use assistive technology to customise this site to your needs

While the site has been created to be usable ‘as is’, many people are likely to get the most accessible experience of using this site by customising their computer to suit their individual needs – for example: to get the site spoken to them, to change its colour scheme, or increase the size of its fonts.

If that sounds like it would be useful to you, we recommend you visit BBC My Web, My Way to watch videos of how these customisations – either using accessibility features of your computer or through installing assistive technologies – might suit you.

Limitations of this site’s accessibility

While we’ve done a lot to ensure this site’s accessibility, you may find some limitations: –

  • Whilst we always aim to communicate clearly and as simply as possible, some of the content may require a reasonable level of technical understanding due to the nature of a Town Council’s business and related governance procedures.
  • Whilst the site has been created using a well coded, professional WordPress theme, the site has not been user-tested with disabled people.
  • The site has been cross-platform and cross-browser tested and is currently compatible with modern browsers, such as Chrome and Microsoft Internet Explorer. You may experience issues with older browsers.

Downloadable files

Files have been made available to download in a variety of formats – the most common are Adobe Acrobat (.pdf), Microsoft Word (.doc and .docx) and Microsoft Excel (.xls and .xlsx). Reasonable adjustments have been made to ensure that digital publications available on our website are as accessible as possible. If you need any document in a different format, please contact us.

You may need to download Adobe Reader to view files in PDF format or download Microsoft viewer software to view Word, Excel or PowerPoint files. The latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader has incorporated accessibility features. For example, you can hear a PDF document read aloud or scroll a PDF document automatically. You can access these features in the Edit Preferences menu.

Find out more about the free Adobe online conversion tool which converts the content of PDF files to a HTML or text which can be understood by most screen reader applications.
