Action on litter – join Bingley’s team of Green and Clean Champions

All equipment provided

Litter is a concern for many of us and although the Town Council can’t organise group litter picks at the moment our team of Green and Clean champions are continuing to make our town and villages cleaner and more pleasant places to live.

How it works

  • To become a Green and Clean Champion, you complete the Green and Clean Champion form and then we will issue you with a free litter picker, gloves and bags.
  • You simply collect litter when you are out and about – in your own time and at your own pace. (You don’t have to collect a specific amount or to notch up a given number of hours – half an hour of your day from time to time is plenty. All we ask is that you drop us a line every couple of months to let us know what you have been able to do.)

Adopt a street

You may wish to ‘adopt’ a particular street or area. If so, let us know, so that we can make sure we can spread our efforts in the most efficient way.

Health and safety

It’s very important that you are aware that you will need to do your individual litter picking at your own risk, as you will not be covered by the Council’s insurance.  The form includes some health and safety guidelines. If you decide to become a Green and Clean Champion, please read them carefully to ensure that you keep yourself safe. And please remember to keep to social distancing guidelines.

Lone working

Please take particular care, if you are working on your own, not to put yourself in danger, for example by entering into hazardous areas. You should also take a mobile phone with you so that you can call for help if you get into difficulty and let someone else know where you are going to be and what time you will be back.

Other activities

Social distancing permitting, we offer one or two networking events per year, to enable you to get together with other Champions and discuss your progress and/or other issues of interest. Please let Councillor Edwina Simpson know if there is anything you would particularly like to see by emailing edwina.simpson@bingleytowncouncil.gov.uk.

We will recommence our group litter picking events when safe to do so. We hope you will feel able to join in with these from time to time, but there is no obligation.

If you work with young people in or out of school and would be interested in our litter education programmes, please do get in touch.

How to sign up

If you are happy to proceed on the above basis, please complete the top section of the Green and Clean Champion form, sign and return to enquiries@bingleytowncouncil.gov.uk. Your signature confirms that you accept the given arrangements and procedures outlined and have read the health and safety information.

The Council will then get in touch to arrange delivery of the equipment to you, at which point we will ask you to complete the bottom half of the form to acknowledge receipt.

Thank you very much for your commitment to making Bingley a more attractive place to live, and we look forward to welcoming you to our team of Green and Clean Champions!
